NSW licensees in charge: Ensure assistant agents are qualified by March 2024

31 August 2023

In the latest issue of ‘Property Matters’, NSW Fair Trading has reminded licensees in charge that they must ensure any assistant agents working under their supervision since March 2020 must apply for their Class 2 licence by 22 March 2024.

NSW Fair Trading reports further on the issue:

Licensees in charge: Ensure assistant agents are qualified by March 2024

Are you a licensee in charge responsible for supervising assistant agents? If so, check their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) status to make sure they get qualified and obtain a class 2 licence by 22 March 2024.

Assistant agents must progress to a class 2 licence within four years of their certificate of registration start date. Those who don’t will not be able to work as an assistant agent for 12 months.

In March 2020, assistant agents had their certificate of registration extended by four years until 22 March 2024. The extension was introduced with the property reforms to ensure assistant agents had time to complete their qualifications and to increase professional standards across the sector. Assistant agents who held a certificate at that time now only have seven months left to complete their Certificate IV qualification and progress to a class 2 licence by 22 March 2024.

Next steps for licensees in charge
Review the licensing status of assistant agents in your agency:

  • If the assistant agent is already enrolled in a Certificate IV – check that they are on track to complete the course and progress to a class 2 licence before their certificate expires.

  • If the assistant agent is not yet enrolled in a Certificate IV – contact a Registered Training Organisation to arrange the training and help them complete the course.

  • Make sure their NSW Fair Trading work experience logbook is completed and verified.
